Celebrate the 121st birthday of Denis’ oldest resident

1st of January on Denis Private Island is special not only because we can start 2019 with a new chance to achieve those good old New Year’s resolutions, but also because it’s the 121st birthday of island’s oldest resident. His name is Toby and he is the most famous giant tortoise on Denis.

Guests spending their holidays with us on Denis Island will be treated to a lively Christmas and New Year’s program filled with arts-and crafts activities for children, Christmas Carols, dancing and special mouth watering feasts prepared by our culinary team, but the fun doesn’t end there.

Our chef prepares a giant tortoise-sized “fruit pie” for Toby to share with his family and friends in the spacious tortoise park where they reside. “The guests love the chance to interact with the island’s oldest resident,” Denis Island Resident Manager Werner du Preez  said. “Toby is iconic to the island.”

Seychelles is home to the world’s largest population of giant tortoises, with at least 150,000 believed to be interspersed throughout the archipelago’s 115 islands. Most of the giant tortoises are native to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Aldabra, the world’s largest raised coral atoll.

So if you’re visiting Denis Private Island during this festive time of the year, don’t miss the chance to celebrate the special 121st birthday of our famous old pal Toby!
