On World Earth Day 2023, Denis Private Island announced that we have planted the first-ever coco de mer’s on the island.
This endemic palm, with its iconic pelvis-shaped nuts, is a true emblem of Seychelles that we can’t wait to share with our guests. The first five nuts have been planted along a forest path not far from the airstrip, and we hope to add more in the future.
The planting was done as part of a nation-wide scheme to encourage local landowners to propagate this rare palm’s population and increase its range of distribution, thus reducing the threat of extinction posed by poaching and the illegal trade of nuts.
Following the success of projects to relocate endemic bird species to Denis Private Island, we hope to see similar results for our coco de mers, and further contribute to securing the survival of Seychelles’ endemic habitats.
Come and visit our coco de mer seedlings during your next stay!
Unfortunately, it will take quite some time until we see the iconic nuts on the island: it can take from 25 to 50 years for trees to reach reproductive maturity.
